Pallet rack falls into four basic categories:
Selective Pallet Racks-the most common type for racking system
Drive-in and Drive-Through Rack-which allows a forklift to drive directly in a lane of stacked rows, or a bay
Push Back Pallet Rack-designed with depth in mind and going as much as six pallets deep with pallets stored on wheeled carts that fit onto rails
Pallet Flow System-high density systems that incorporates rail with rollers that enable pallets to move easily, sometimes with a motion and braking system to control the speed of the pallet
Pallet rack is composed of beams and frames. The pallet beams attach horizontally to the vertical upright frames to construct the basic pallet racks system. There are a variety of types of beams and frames that are used (not utilized-keep it at a 5th or 6th grade reading level) depending on your (pretend you are talking to a customer) application.
Numerous considerations are taken into account when designing a pallet rack system, from weight requirements and floor space to inventory accessibility and cost of materials and installation. Because of the weight and size of pallets, safety has to be considered at all times. Some states require pallet rack to meet certain seismic requirements. In short, selecting the proper rack is best done with the consultation of a rack expert.
Pallet rack, as the name implies, is a material handling solution designed to accommodate the storage of pallets, or “skids”. Pallet rack is a typically used when traditional steel or wide-span shelving does not have the weight, depth or height capacity to store warehoused goods. And pallet rack isn’t always in the back of the store-if you’ve been to a Home Depot or many other “big box” stores you’ve seen the pallet rack in action (usually with steel decking)
